How the scrap gold value is calculated
Gold is priced per troy ounce of pure metal, and one troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. Divide the ounce price by that figure and you get the price per gram of 24k gold — right now €117.92 in euros. Jewellery is an alloy, so the gram price is multiplied by the purity factor of the karat: 0.750 for 18k, 0.585 for 14k, 0.375 for 9k. The formula is simply weight × purity × price per gram.
Examples with today's price
- A broken 14k chain weighing 12 g: 12 × 0.585 = 7.02 g of fine gold, about €827.83.
- An 18k wedding ring of 6 g: 4.5 g of fine gold, about €530.66.
- A 9k signet ring of 8 g: 3 g of fine gold, about €353.77.
- A 22k Sovereign coin: 7.32 g of fine gold, about €863.20.
Step-by-step: preparing gold to sell
Sort pieces by hallmark first, because buyers who weigh a mixed pile together may price everything at the lowest karat. Weigh each group on a jewellery scale, ideally to 0.01 g. Take out stones, pearls, watch movements and steel springs. Then run each group through the calculator and add up the totals; that sum is the melt value of your lot and the number to compare offers against.
What gold buyers actually pay
A scrap gold buyer has to send metal to a refiner, pay for assaying and cover their own costs, so offers are always below melt value. Online refiners, local jewellers and pawn shops differ widely. Ask each buyer for their price per gram for your karat, or for their offer as a percentage of melt value, and compare it with the figure above. Designer and antique jewellery may be worth more intact than as scrap, so check the resale market first.
Gold price per gram by karat
Each grade has its own page with a live price table, a calculator prefilled for that karat and tips specific to where the grade is used: 24k gold price per gram, 22k gold price per gram, 21k gold price per gram, 18k gold price per gram, 14k gold price per gram, 10k gold price per gram, 9k gold price per gram.
Publish your shop’s indicative buying rates
The gold buyer widget applies your shop margin to each selected fineness and displays a buying table. Choose a credited previous-day reference or live white-label prices with a paid shop key; the final offer still follows testing and weighing.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate the value of scrap gold?
- Weigh the item in grams, multiply by its purity factor (0.375 for 9k, 0.585 for 14k, 0.750 for 18k, 0.916 for 22k) and by the current pure gold price per gram.
- How do I know what karat my gold is?
- Look for a hallmark such as 375, 585, 750, 916 or 999, or a karat stamp like 9K, 14K or 18K, usually inside a ring or on a clasp. Unmarked pieces can be acid- or XRF-tested.
- Will a gold buyer pay the price shown?
- No. The calculator shows the melt value of the gold content. Buyers pay less to cover refining, assaying and margin, so use the figure as a benchmark and compare quotes.
- Should I remove stones before weighing?
- Yes, if you can. Stones, pearls, steel springs and other metals add weight but no gold value. Otherwise ask the buyer to estimate and deduct them.
- Can I weigh gold on a kitchen scale?
- A kitchen scale is fine for a rough idea, but a jewellery scale with 0.01 g resolution gives a much more accurate estimate for small items.
- Is gold-plated or gold-filled jewellery scrap gold?
- Not really. Plated (GP, RGP) and filled (GF) items contain only a thin layer of gold and are worth very little as scrap.
- How often is the gold price updated?
- The price is refreshed from MetalflowAPI at least every ten minutes and rendered into this page on the server.
