Methodology and data source
Where the prices come from
Live prices on this site and in every widget come from MetalflowAPI, a precious metals data provider covering gold, silver, platinum and palladium. We request the latest spot quote per troy ounce for each metal; US dollar, euro and pound sterling prices are delivered natively.
Other currencies
For CHF, PLN, SEK, DKK, NOK, CZK and HUF we convert the US dollar price using the exchange rates published by MetalflowAPI. The displayed change compares the first and last available points in the requested 25-hour live feed window. It is an approximate feed-window change, not necessarily an exact same-time previous-day close. Converted currencies retain that underlying dollar change; it does not include historical exchange-rate changes.
Update frequency and caching
Our servers cache full quotes for up to ten minutes per currency (every minute if a metal is temporarily missing). Embedded widgets re-check every five minutes. If the upstream feed fails, the last good price is shown for up to 24 hours; if no price is available at all, a dash is shown instead of a misleading zero. The 30-day chart uses daily closing prices, cached for six hours.
Units
One troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 grams. The price per gram is the ounce price divided by 31.1034768, and the price per kilogram is the gram price multiplied by 1,000. One pennyweight is 1.55517384 grams.
Karat purity maths
A karat is one 24th part of gold. The hallmark states the same purity in parts per thousand. The value of an item is weight in grams × purity factor × pure gold price per gram. We use these factors:
- 24k gold: hallmark 999, factor 0.999
- 22k gold: hallmark 916, factor 0.916
- 21k gold: hallmark 875, factor 0.875
- 18k gold: hallmark 750, factor 0.750
- 14k gold: hallmark 585, factor 0.585
- 10k gold: hallmark 417, factor 0.417
- 9k gold: hallmark 375, factor 0.375
Historical charts use a separate monthly source
The 2025 and ten-year history pages use an attributed World Bank Pink Sheet snapshot dated 2 October 2026, with observations through September 2026. These are nominal USD monthly averages per troy ounce, not MetalflowAPI daily closes. We retain each observation’s month and reject missing or non-positive values. The twelve-month summary on the 2025 page is the unweighted mean of its monthly averages, not an independently calculated daily-weighted annual benchmark. Older history is not converted using today’s currency rate.
Read the 2025 monthly table or theten-year comparison. Historical snapshots only change when a new source is checked and imported; neither chart implies a forecast.
Purity factors and measured assays
We use the listed millesimal hallmark factors rather than assuming every karat label is mathematically identical to its hallmark. For example, 14 divided by 24 is 0.583333, while a 585 mark gives 0.585. For an item sold on an assay report, the buyer’s measured fineness and net metal weight can differ from this reference. Stones, steel parts and other materials should not be counted as gold. A content estimate is not an appraisal of craftsmanship, collector demand, stones or insurance replacement cost.
Source timestamps and stale quotes
The visible source timestamp identifies the feed observation used, not the time your page opened. If a cached price is served during an outage, its timestamp stays visible. Refresh intervals are cache and polling policies, not a promise that the upstream service publishes a new trade every five minutes. Never treat a stale or unavailable reference as a guaranteed executable dealer quote.
Disclaimer
Figures are indicative market values of the pure metal content, for information only. They are not an offer to buy or sell, and not financial advice. Dealers, refiners and shops apply their own premiums, fees and margins, and actual purity may differ from the stamp. Always get a professional valuation before making a decision. Spot an error?
