21 karat gold is 21/24 gold; the hallmark 875 means 875 parts per thousand, so we use a purity factor of 0.875 (87.5% gold). Why 21k is popular in the Middle East
Across the Gulf and North Africa gold jewellery is bought as wearable savings, so buyers want high purity, while still needing a metal hard enough for bangles and chains. 21k strikes that balance. In Egypt it is often called 'ayar 21' and local daily prices are quoted per gram for 21k first, then for 18k and 24k.
Calculating the 21k price
The maths is the same as for any karat: 21 divided by 24 gives 0.875. Multiply the weight in grams by 0.875 and by the pure gold price per gram. Shops in the region add a workmanship fee per gram on top when selling, and deduct a smaller fee when buying back, so their posted buy and sell prices sit either side of the melt value shown here.
Tips for buyers and sellers
Keep receipts: many Gulf jewellers will buy back their own pieces at a better rate. Check that the 875 or 21K stamp is present, and weigh items yourself before visiting a shop. Because 21k is less common in Europe and the US, local scrap buyers there may treat it like 18k unless it is tested, so ask for an XRF test.
