Read the fineness, not just the colour

Karat expresses the gold share of an alloy on a twenty-four-part scale. A millesimal mark expresses fineness in parts per thousand. The familiar jewellery grades are related to those marks but are not always exact mathematical equivalents. This site uses 375, 417, 585, 750, 875, 916 and 999 for its seven reference grades. A 585 mark therefore uses a factor of 0.585, not a rounded 0.58. The actual assay and net weight still control a real settlement.

Compare gold content before comparing offers

Ten grams of 375 jewellery contains 3.75 grams of gold; ten grams of 750 contains 7.5 grams. The second item has twice the fine-gold content, but it need not have twice the resale or replacement value. Design, stones, maker and condition are different questions from melt value. Separate different grades in a mixed lot and ask the buyer to state its tested fineness for each group. An average purity selected by eye is not a reliable substitute.

Hallmarks have a jurisdiction

A number stamp is useful evidence, not a universal authentication guarantee. UK recognised hallmarks, European fineness marks and US karat descriptions need to be read in their own context.
