How the 18k gold price is calculated
18 karat gold is 18/24 gold; the hallmark 750 means 750 parts per thousand, so we use a purity factor of 0.750 (75% gold). At the current pure gold price of €117.92 per gram, one gram of 18k gold contains €88.44 worth of gold. A 10 g item is worth about €884.43, and a troy ounce (31.10 g) of 18k metal about €2,751.

Why 18k dominates fine jewellery
Three parts gold to one part alloy gives 18k a deep colour and enough hardness to hold stones securely. That is why engagement rings, high-end chains and watch cases from Swiss and Italian makers are so often 18k. White, yellow and rose 18k all contain the same 75% gold; only the alloying metals differ, so their melt value per gram is identical.
Valuing 18k jewellery
Multiply the weight in grams by 0.750 and by the current pure gold price per gram. A 5 g 18k ring therefore contains 3.75 g of fine gold. Remove diamonds and other stones from the weight if you can, or ask the buyer to deduct them: a one-carat diamond weighs 0.2 g, and settings in platinum must be excluded entirely.
Selling 18k for the best price
Branded pieces from well-known houses often sell for more than their gold content on the second-hand market, so check that before sending them to be melted. For unbranded or broken items, get at least two quotes and ask each buyer what percentage of melt value they pay. Our widget and calculator show the melt value so you have a benchmark.
