Where 10k gold comes from
In North America, 10k is widely used for high-school and college class rings, men's chains and budget jewellery, because it is durable and keeps prices low. Outside the US it is less common: the UK and much of Europe skip from 9k straight to 14k, so you may see 10k mainly on imported pieces.
How to value 10k gold
10 divided by 24 gives 0.4167. Multiply the weight in grams by 0.417 and by the current pure gold price per gram. A 15 g 10k class ring contains about 6.26 g of fine gold. Class rings frequently contain synthetic stones and engraved inserts, which buyers deduct from the weight.
