Choose an estimate or an embeddable tool
The scrap calculator is for a seller who wants to work through a weight and purity estimate. The embeddable calculator is for a website owner who wants visitors to make that estimate without leaving the page. Both start from a current fine-gold reference and apply a fineness factor. Neither is a valuation certificate or a commitment to buy. Keep the source timestamp visible and describe any commercial buying rate separately from the calculator result.
Prepare the inputs
Use grams or troy ounces consistently, not an ordinary kitchen ounce. Remove stone and non-gold weight from the calculation where it can be measured safely. For an uncertain piece, ask a buyer to explain the tested fineness and accepted weight. A ten-gram 750 piece contains 7.5 grams of gold, so its theoretical content estimate is 7.5 times the current fine-gold gram price. A 585 piece of the same weight uses 5.85 grams instead. Compare grades without changing the weight to see this difference clearly.
Turn an estimate into a useful comparison
Write the theoretical value and the buyer’s net offer on separate lines. Dividing the net offer by the theoretical value gives a comparable payout proportion, but only when the source time, weight and grade match. Ask what deductions cover and whether returning the item has a fee. A pawn loan is another transaction entirely: interest, charges and redemption rules must be considered alongside the immediate cash amount. For a collectible or designer piece, get a resale opinion before treating it as scrap. Keep a worksheet for each item with gross weight, excluded components, accepted metal weight and the selected fineness. For a chain with a replaced clasp, ask whether that component was tested separately. Do not substitute an insured replacement value for a melt estimate: replacement includes retail services and design costs. If a buyer revises the amount after testing, request the revised inputs and any return charges before accepting. A transparent calculation is more useful than a high advertised percentage that does not identify the grade or the reference time.
