How the 14k gold price is calculated

14 karat gold is 14/24 gold; the hallmark 585 means 585 parts per thousand, so we use a purity factor of 0.585 (58.5% gold). At the current pure gold price of €117.92 per gram, one gram of 14k gold contains €68.99 worth of gold. A 10 g item is worth about €689.85, and a troy ounce (31.10 g) of 14k metal about €2,146.

Why 14k is so popular

With just over half of its weight in gold, 14k is noticeably cheaper than 18k while still looking unmistakably gold. It is harder and more scratch resistant, which suits chains, bracelets and rings worn every day. In Poland and Germany jewellers usually label it 585, and in the United States it is stamped 14K or 14KT.

Calculating the value of 14k gold

The precise karat ratio is 14 ÷ 24 = 0.583, but European hallmarking uses 585 as the minimum fineness, so we use 0.585. Multiply grams by 0.585 and by the pure gold price per gram. A 20 g 14k chain contains 11.7 g of fine gold, and the calculator above shows its value at today's price.

Selling 14k gold chains and rings

Hollow chains weigh less than they look, and plated or filled items (marked GF, RGP or 1/20) contain very little gold, so a scale and a hallmark check matter more than appearance. Mixed lots of 14k and 18k should be weighed separately, because buyers who weigh them together may price the whole lot at the lower karat.
