How the 24k gold price is calculated
24 karat gold is 24/24 gold; the hallmark 999 means 999 parts per thousand, so we use a purity factor of 0.999 (99.9% gold). At the current pure gold price of €117.92 per gram, one gram of 24k gold contains €117.81 worth of gold. A 10 g item is worth about €1,178, and a troy ounce (31.10 g) of 24k metal about €3,664.

What 24k gold is used for
Because pure gold is soft, 24k is rarely used for everyday jewellery in Europe or North America. It is the standard for cast and minted bars from one gram up to one kilogram, and for coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf, the Austrian Philharmonic and the Chinese Panda, which are struck in 999.9 fine gold. In parts of Asia, notably China and Hong Kong, 24k chuk kam jewellery is also popular because its value tracks the metal price almost exactly.
Why 24k is the reference price
When you see a gold price per gram quoted without a karat, it almost always means pure gold. Every other grade is a fraction of it: 22k is 91.6%, 18k is 75% and 14k is 58.5%. That is why this page is the starting point of our scrap gold cluster. Get the 24k figure right and every other karat follows from a single multiplication.
Buying and selling 24k bullion
Bars and coins are bought above the spot price and sold slightly below it. The premium on small items such as one-gram bars is far higher than on a one-ounce coin or a 100 g bar, so compare the price per gram including premium, not the headline. When selling, branded bars in their original assay card are easiest to resell. Qualifying investment bars or wafers need at least 99.5% purity under the EU framework; coin eligibility has separate conditions. Jewellery does not automatically qualify.

Frequently asked questions
- Is 24k gold 100% pure?
- Not quite. Commercial 24k gold is at least 99.9% pure (hallmark 999); many modern bullion coins are 99.99% (9999). Absolute 100% purity is not achievable in practice.
- Why is 24k gold not used for most rings?
- Pure gold is very soft and scratches and bends easily, so rings and chains worn every day are normally made from 18k, 14k or 9k alloys that are harder.
- Is 24k the same as the spot price?
- The spot price is quoted for pure gold, so 24k items track it closely. Bars and coins still carry a dealer premium when you buy and a small discount when you sell.
- What is 999 versus 9999 gold?
- 999 means 99.9% gold and 9999 means 99.99% gold. Both are sold as 24k; the price difference per gram is around 0.09% of the metal value.
- Does 24k gold tarnish?
- No. Pure gold does not oxidise or tarnish under normal conditions, which is one reason it has been used for coins and bars for centuries.
