How the 22k gold price is calculated
22 karat gold is 22/24 gold; the hallmark 916 means 916 parts per thousand, so we use a purity factor of 0.916 (91.6% gold). At the current pure gold price of £98.99 per gram, one gram of 22k gold contains £90.68 worth of gold. A 10 g item is worth about £906.77, and a troy ounce (31.10 g) of 22k metal about £2,820.

Where you will meet 22k gold
In India, 22k is the default grade for wedding jewellery, bangles and necklaces, and BIS-hallmarked pieces carry the 916 stamp. The British Sovereign, the South African Krugerrand and the American Gold Eagle are also struck in 22k, alloyed with copper (and in the Eagle's case some silver) to make them harder wearing than pure gold.
22k coins versus 24k coins
A Krugerrand weighs 33.93 g but contains exactly one troy ounce of fine gold, because the extra weight is alloy. So when you value a 22k coin, the fine gold content is what counts, not the total weight. For a Sovereign the fine gold content is 7.32 g. Multiply that fine weight by the pure gold price and you have the melt value.
Selling 22k jewellery
Indian-style jewellery often has significant making charges, which you will not get back when selling. Dealers pay for the gold content only, minus a small deduction, and may test the piece because some older items are slightly below the stamped purity. Weigh it, multiply by 0.916 and by today's 24k gram price, and you have a fair benchmark.
